VISCERA, THE INCARNATE POLYPHONY
March 20 and 28, 2026: Concordia University Irvine and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Monrovia

Vox Obscura explores the origins of sacred music from ancient Eastern Orthodox hymns and chants to complex western polyphony - all within a meditative, Lenten framework. This programmatic concert examines the physical relationship between man and creator within the living, breathing landscape of early music. Seating is limited - please reserve tickets in advance for this intimate performance at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Monrovia. Viscera will also serve as the foundation for Vox Obscura's debut album.

Works by Pérotin, Machaut, Josquin, and Vox Obscura composers with ancient and medieval orthodox music from Hebrew, Greek, Arabac, and Georgian traditions.

QUEEN OF HEARTS (The Gesualdo Six)
February 04, 2026: St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach

Vox Obscura hosts The Gesualdo Six, featuring six of Britain’s finest consort singers, performing “Queen of Hearts,” a program of motets and chansons from the courts of Anne of Brittany, Margaret of Austria, Anne Boleyn and Mary Tudor spiced with short works from the present day. Gramophone Magazine described a recent performance as “Ingeniously programmed and impeccably delivered, with that undefinable excitement that comes from a group of musicians working absolutely as one.” Queen of Hearts” is a musical Who’s Who of great European queens as portrayed in music of the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries.

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY: MUSIC OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL
November 22, 2025: at Red Hill Lutheran Church, Tustin

Vox Obscura invites you to an evening of Renaissance sacred music inspired by the traditions of the Sistine Chapel, one of Europe’s most revered places of worship. The program offers thoughtfully crafted performances of chant and polyphony, with works by composers such as Josquin, Palestrina, Lotti, and the hauntingly beautiful Miserere mei, Deus by Allegri. Sung primarily a cappella or with light string accompaniment, this concert explores the passion and drama of the great Renaissance musicians, inspired by the art and history of the Sistine Chapel.

MUSIC OF THE ALL NIGHT VIGIL
June 14, 2025: St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox, Irvine

Vox Obscura presents an evening of early Byzantine and Slavic choral music, uniquely structured around key excerpts from Rachmaninoff’s legendary All-Night Vigil. Joined by guest oktavist Alexander Mayang, the professional 16-voice choir will explore some of the earliest examples of sacred music - including the oldest known Christian hymn and the ancient chants that inspired Rachmaninoff himself.

This one-of-a-kind program weaves together ancient musical traditions with one of the most beloved choral masterworks of the 20th century, performed in the world class acoustics of St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine.

Vox Obscura performs at First Lutheran Church in Venice CA in their popular Masters in the Chapel concert Series. This concert is offered free of charge thanks to the support of Masters in the Chapel donors and will explore the diverse landscape of the European Renaissance through choral and instrumental music from England to Eastern Europe - and everywhere in between. Featuring repertoire by Josquin, Tallis, Byrd, Fernandes, Guerrero, Gesualdo, Falconieri, and more!

'In Flagrante Delicto' explores themes of Love and Longing prevalent in Italian Madrigals and folk music of the Renaissance. Vox Obscura delves into a wide variety of music, sacred and secular, including the complex chromaticism of Carlo Gesualdo, the brilliance of Claudio Monteverdi, the beauty of Palestrina, the improvisatory spirit (Sprezzatura) of Italian Madrigals, and more! Join us in the beautiful acoustics of Anaheim First Presbyterian Church for this unique concert experience.

Vox Obscura unites skilled vocalists in Southern California to perform cultivated concerts inspired by timeless sacred, folk, and art repertoire from a wide variety of early music traditions.  Our music programs are carefully curated to restore the original spirit and intent of the composer for a modern audience. We hope you join us for our debut concert in the beautiful, resonant acoustics of St. Michael & All Angels. This concert will explore music by William Byrd, John Taverner, Christopher Tye, and more.
